For years, Sheryl Kluge has worked to help Cabarrus County residents struggling to put food on the table, even when her own nonprofit had no permanent place to call home.

At one point, that meant operating out of two single-car garages at her Kannapolis apartment complex, neither equipped with a bathroom, heating or air conditioning.

But those days are now behind her.

In early September, Kluge, founder and executive director of 1Can, moved the nonprofit into a new 1,500-square-foot headquarters at 80 Spring St. in downtown Concord.
