Cabarrus County Schools Cancel Classes May 1 as Staff Plan to Attend Raleigh Rally
Traditional students will have no classes May 1, while Early Colleges remain open for exams
Cabarrus County Schools has announced that Friday, May 1, will be designated as an optional teacher workday, resulting in no classes for students on the traditional calendar.
District officials said the decision comes as a significant number of educators are expected to travel to Raleigh to take part in a statewide event focused on public education. After reviewing anticipated staffing levels, school leaders determined they would be unable to safely maintain normal operations across all campuses.
Early College students will still attend classes as scheduled due to ongoing college exams, the district confirmed.
CCS joins Kannapolis City Schools, which announced last week that students would not have class on May 1.
Superintendent Dr. John Kopicki said the move was made with student safety, supervision, and the overall learning environment as top priorities.
“This decision was made with careful consideration and with our students’ safety, supervision, and learning environment in mind,” Kopicki said in a post on social media. “At the same time, I recognize the dedication of our teachers and the vital role they play in supporting student success each day.”
The district noted that details regarding extracurricular activities and field trips planned for May 1 will be shared directly by individual schools.
Officials also recognized that the schedule change may present challenges for families and expressed appreciation for their flexibility and understanding.
The May 1 event, known as the “Kids Over Corporations” rally, is being organized by the North Carolina Association of Educators (NCAE) and is expected to draw educators, parents and community members from across the state. Organizers say the rally will focus on issues including public school funding, voucher spending and broader education policy.
