Cabarrus County Schools closed Monday after winter storm
District cites unsafe travel conditions; no make-up day required as extracurriculars and childcare programs are cancelled.

Cabarrus County Schools will close all campuses on Monday, Jan. 26, citing lingering impacts from Winter Storm Fern and concerns about unsafe travel conditions.
The district announced the decision early Sunday afternoon, noting that no make-up day will be required because additional instructional hours are already built into the academic calendar.
All KIDS:PLUS childcare services will be suspended Monday, and all athletic, extracurricular and community-use events have been cancelled for the day.
District employees were instructed to check their staff email or visit the Finance Department website for reporting guidelines.
“The safety of our students and staff is a top priority for Cabarrus County Schools,” the statement read. “Please be safe in your travels. Thank you for your support and understanding.”
The winter storm brought a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain that started Saturday evening and has continued Sunday. Local officials have urged residents to use caution if they must travel.
Heavy icing is still expected later Sunday, with forecasts calling for roughly a quarter- to a half-inch of ice.
Cabarrus County officials have opened an emergency shelter at the Concord Active Living Center (formerly the Concord Senior Center) to support residents affected by ongoing winter storm conditions.
The facility, located at 331 Corban Ave. SE in Concord, is open to anyone in need of a warm, safe place to stay. Visitors should use the main entrance on the far-right side of the property.
