Tom Cruise’s most iconic characters — Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise and Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the Top Gun films — are defined by action. They run, fight, fly fighter jets, battle bad guys and hurl themselves into danger, often at full speed.

In Cruise’s newest — and one of his most audacious — films, Digger, which opened Friday, he trades that familiar physical heroism for something far stranger.
