“We are a resilient community." Concord to Hold Christmas Parade as Planned After Friday Shooting
City leaders cite nearly a century of tradition and community resilience though additional security measures will be in place.
Despite Friday’s shooting, the City of Concord says the 97th Concord Christmas Parade will move forward as planned Saturday afternoon, citing the community’s long-standing resilience and commitment to shared traditions.
In a statement Saturday morning, Concord Mayor Bill Dusch said Concord’s close-knit identity and nearly century-old parade tradition played a key role in the decision.
“We are a close-knit community with a proud history. The Concord Christmas Parade is and always has been one of our most beloved traditions,” Dusch said. “We are a resilient community and will not let the senseless actions of a few individuals steal another tradition from us.”
Dusch acknowledged that some families may choose not to attend in light of Friday’s violence but emphasized that others may find comfort in gathering together.
“Some families may choose to stay home and we understand and respect their decision,” he continued. “We also know that many find comfort, harmony, and healing in community and our parade has provided that for our City for nearly a century.”
As a result, the City said the 97th Concord Christmas Parade will proceed at 2:30 p.m., with the Santa Scramble 5K also continuing as scheduled.
“We remain committed to providing a safe and welcoming experience for everyone who attends,” he said. He noted additional security measures will be in place throughout the event.
The shooting occurred around 7:30 p.m. Friday and left four people wounded, sending fear and shockwaves through the community.
Concord Police determined it was an isolated incident between two individuals who knew each other — not a random act of violence directed at the public.
The Concord Police Department is still asking witnesses to share any photos or videos from the scene. Submissions can be made at the following link:
